No, because the government sent out letters saying they had to go.(Which is called being drafted)

What were you doing this happened?
I was work in Des Moines and I heard about it on the news, I was so shocked that, that had happened.
What kind of person was he?
He was probably a bad man because he liked doing it. He had to have been rather crazy. He probably did it because he did not like the government and he enjoyed it.
What kind of family did he have?
He probably did not have a very good family, meaning that he could have killed a lot of people.
What kind of bombing was this?
In the Oklahoma bombing of April 1995, 168 bodies were found, the Unabomber it was.
What was something’s about him?
His name was Timothy Micveu. He was in his Twenties, he grew up in Pendleton, NY. His job was a soldier.
The bombing was horriable. The worst part was that at the bottom of the building was a day care full of children that died in the bombing. We won’t forget.

The Collapsed Interveiw
Levees & Sandbags
How high did the water in rivers reach?
I don't know exactly but it was enough to go over the spillway at Saylorville Lake. I know that a lot of places on bigger rivers than the Des Moines River had worse flooding than us.
Did you lose water and electricity during the flood?
We lost water for about ten days and we didn't lose electricity. West Des Moines didn't lose water because their treatment center didn't flood so I remember us being in West Des Moines a lot with relatives and eating our suppers at Hyvee.
Were there any food banks and shelters open for people with destroyed homes?
I bet that there were more than usual open. The one that I remember is that Camp Dodge opened for shower facilities.
What was destroyed during this flood?
Principal Park was all flooded except for the pitchers mound. Valley Junction also flooded because there were no levees or floodgates.
Did any companies step up and provide any services?
After people had realized that we had no water they were bringing in tanker trucks full of water and they would all leave empty. Annheiser Busch in Missouri started bottling water in their cans instead of alchohol. Some work places also relaxed their dresscode because people couldn't get some of their clothes clean.
What was the worst part of this flood?
The worst part for us was not being able to flush a toilet or wash your hands or cook.(not bad in this case) It was just very strange that nothing really worked.
I have concluded that we were very lucky to not have anything destroyed in Waukee and I'm glad that most of Des Moines has recovered. I would not have survived in the conditions that some people had to. My perspective did not change too much because I had heard all of my Mom's stories about this topic before. That is what made me choose this as a topic because I've heard stories but now I have more primary sources.

The Tragic Day
Question 1: “Tell me about your morning on September 11th 2001.”
Answer: “The morning was just like any other morning. I ate breakfast, and read the paper.”
Question 2: “Where were you at the time you heard about the first plane crashing into 1 of the Twin Towers?”
Answer: “I was on the way to work and I heard it on the radio. It just sounded like it was an airplane accident. But the broadcasters were describing horrible tragic deaths.”
Question 3: “How did you react?”
Answer: “I was very surprised and puzzled. I thought it was odd that a commercial airline would make such a mistake. I wondered what could have gone wrong for a plane to crash into one of the towers.”
Question 4: “How did everyone around you react?”
Answer: “Well, when I got to work I remembered a co-worker had returned a small TV he had borrowed from me. So we all gathered around and watched TV. We then watched the 2nd plane collide with the other tower. We watched in horror as people were jumping out of windows to their death. I can only imagine what was going through their minds.”
Question 5: “Were you scared?”
Answer: “A little scared.”
Question 6: “Had anything like this ever happened before?”
Answer: “No not in the US. It’s easy to take for granted how safe it is to live in the US.”
Question 7: “ Did the tragedy change your daily routine, and how?”
Answer: “A little bit. On the radio, TV and papers the tragedy of 9/11 was a major headline for weeks and even months.”
Question 8: “Did it have any effect on your business, if so was it good or bad?”
Answer: “Yes, it was good and bad, because I’m in a mortgage business, when stock market crashed it helped lower mortgage rates. For a couple days after 9/11 the banking system pretty much shut down.”
Question 9: “Where was your family at the time?”
Answer: “My daughter was at preschool. And my wife and son were at home.”
Question 10: “What changed in your life after 9/11?”
Answer: “I think the fear of terrorism became some what common to the general public. The government talked about terrorism much more than before.”
Question 11: “ What made this event so important?”
Answer: “It was the first major terrorist attack on US soil. The Twin Towers were somewhat of an icon for US Capitalism. The Taliban were strongly opposed to Western influences.”
Question 12: “Are there any other US events you could relate this to?”
Answer: “Maybe the Oklahoma bombing.”
I was only 3 when 9/11 happened, so I don’t remember anything about it. After talking to my dad I learned that it was one of the most important events in US history. It was a tragic event and led us into war.

Thundering Fall
Question #1: So Dad, where were you when the wall fell?
Answer: “I was in my junior year at Iowa State University watching T.V. in a student lounge.”
Question #2: How did you feel when the wall started to fall? Why did you feel that way?
Answer: “I was shocked and I didn’t think it would ever happen because the division had been there so long. It didn’t seem possible for it to go away any time soon.”
Question #3: Why was the wall so important to you?
Answer: “Because I had visited the wall in the summer of 1987, and I went to Check Point Charley and watched others cross the border into East Berlin.”
Question #4: What did you do after you heard about the fall of the wall?
Answer: “I watched T.V. well into the morning."
Question #5: Do you know anybody that was affected by the fall? If so, how were they affected by the fall?
Answer: “I did not personally know anyone directly affected by the wall. Indirectly, I’m sure my German brother who was in the West German Military at the time saw reduced tension on the East and West German border.”
Question #6: Do you think it was dangerous for the Germans?
Answer: “Potentially. The risk was in what the Soviet Union would do in response. East Germany was a puppet state and it ran the risk of provoking the Soviet Union to send troops to stop the fall of the wall.”
Question #7: I hear it was on your birthday when it fell. How were you celebrating your birthday?
Answer: “I was watching T.V. on November 9, my 22nd birthday.”
Question #8: Why T.V.?
Answer: “It was before the internet and every major news channel was covering this event live.”
Question #9: Did you want to be there at the moment?
Answer: “Yes, it would have been a chance to be part of a Where Were You When... moment.”
Question #10: Do you have any thing else to add?
Answer: When I was in Berlin, Check Point Charley was the main U.S. border crossing into East Berlin. Every afternoon, an East German armed personnel carrier would drive to the West Berlin side of the border and the solders would sit on the car and smoke. Why? Because they could.
My prospective changed because I never knew there was so much involved in this event. At first, I thought that someone hit the wall with a wrecking ball. I now know that the East German government collapsed.

1 Tragedy and 1 Great Sucess
What part do you remember the best and what was your favorite part?
For me, the lift-off as both. It's the adrenaline and anticipation that catches you as they go into the stars. I think you could ask anyone who experienced the launch and they would say the same thing.
Could your mind feel the heat like you were there in person?
Yes, in a way. It is tough to feel the heat actually, but in my mind I was burning up in a way. It may have been the intensity and pressure, but anyway this is a historical landmark in US and World history. It was just astonishing the way it was.
Was it among the top 5 moments in your life?
Yes, ranking 5th. It was just such a big deal and a landmark for the USA.
When the challenger exploded if you were an employee who had communication with them when it went off course, what would you have said to the astronauts inside the Challenger?
I would have been stunned and confused. Also time goes way too fast so you really can't say anything.
What would you have said to the media about the Challenger as CEO of NASA?
I would have said, "We are proud of those brave astronauts. They gave us the warning to check everything more cautiously. This was a great learning experience and also a tragedy.
Thank you, Challengers."
Going to any launch would be fun. How would you describe going to one?
Well, first off it would be loud and very warm. The ground may shake also. Adrenaline levels would be very high. It would be fun, and I would consider going to one.
This was my interview with my grandma, Dorothy Smith. My prospective of rocket launches was that it was one of the coolest things ever because the flames and heat are so extraordinary. That never changed throughout the interview. My grandma also taught me how important astronauts are to the world. I had a lot of fun doing this interview and my grandma was glad to help out. Thanks Grandma!

A Little Piece of Living History
From what country were you an immigrant? If so, did you dream of going to America?
No, I wasn't an immigrant. My Grandparents were though. They were from Norway. I bet my Grandfather did dream of going to America. He wanted to be a farmer, but there was very little good farming land in Norway.
What were you most fascinated by as a child?
Wow! So many choices! There was very little technology back then, so I guess I was amazed by reading.
Are there any truly memorable events that happened in your lifetime? Are there any big ones that haven't affected you?
Well, my mother died when I was only nine years old. Some other personal events that happened were that I had children and got grandchildren! My daughter and I also went back to Norway. Some events that haven't included me are wars, such as the 2nd world war, and the atom bomb too. We didn't really have segregation either. But we lived in an area for Norwegians, so there were hardly any, if not any colored people.
How did you react when President Kennedy was shot? What was the country like momentarily without a present?
I was in a state of shock, acting like, 'This could not happen!' The world kept going, though the entire nation was in shock too. The Vice President, Lindon Johnson, took control over the country in the role of the President.
Because you lived near Norman Borlaug and his family as a child, do you remember how they reacted when they heard what he did?
They were very surprised. Even Norman was! I heard from his sister that he was just out with his crops when his wife told him. Norman thought she was joking! His family was (and is!) probably very proud.
What is the thing you're most surprised that you've experienced?
Well, once there was a tornado next door. Their house was one of the few things left from the wreckage. My neighbor came to my door saying, "My farm blew away!"
What types of technology that you had when you were little and is still here today would you say has improved the most? Are you amazed at how fast technology has grown?
Absolutely! Way beyond what I can understand! When I was 18 years old we got electricity on our farm. My family and I had a few lights, a toaster, a refrigerator, and a wood-burning stove. Other than that we didn't have much technology. But electricity was very important.
Has you're life changed more or less than you thought it would over you're lifetime?
Well, I did expect a family, and better technology. But I wasn't smart enough to know that the things and events would be like they are. Everything has so far amazed me.
What would you say is human-kind's biggest accomplishment so far?
Probably the field of medicine. They have made many vaccines for diseases and other types of sickness. I just can't believe the break through of replacing hearts, bones, and many other body parts too! I am surprised at the other medicines of many kinds.
This interview was amazing in a lot of ways. We really take technology, electricity, and even indoor plumbing for granted! Now I realize that they didn't have as much technology as I thought they did. If I compared and 18 year old's life in 1948 to an 18 year old's life now, I can see how much harder life would be like to be an 18 year old back then! It was interesting to hear how different my Grandma's life was compared to mine. It helped me see how much has changed in just one lifetime.

9/11 was such a bad attack. I hope everyone will remember it forever. I learned a lot of information to take away from this about 9/11. I know I will always remember this horrible terrorist attack even though I was to small to understand the impact it would have on us for the rest of our lives.
