A VETERAN FROM WWII

It was the year 1943 when my Grandpa enlisted in the War (World War II). This war was a very deadly war. I didn't know that much about it until we got our assignment and I then decided to learn more about it. This is how the Interview went.

Question: How long did you fight in the war?
Answer: "I fought for about 2 1/2 -3 years in the Navy."

Question: How come you wanted to be a Navy man?
Answer: "I really didn't want to but it was the war. I decided to serve my country as a Navy man."

Question: What did you do during the War on the ship?
Answer: "We would go on watch for 4 hours then take a break for 8 hours. That's pretty much all we did."

Question: What was it like in the war?
Answer: "Bombing all over. I was home sick, and sometimes it was boring."

Question: Were you ever scared that you might die?
Answer: "Yes, very, very scared."

Question: What was it like being on the water a lot?
Answer: "Weird at first, but got used to it. It was also boring."

Question: Where did you sleep on the ship?
Answer: "In the back of the ship, in a bunk that was 2 people high."

Question: Did everyone smoke from a pipe?
Answer: "No, but 3/4 of the men did."

Question: Is there anything else you would like to say?
Answer:"Yes,"
"We never bombed anyone."
"My ship was mostly supplies."
"Great big wheels were used to turn ship."
"The supplies we brought were ammunition and other supplies used in the war."
" I could see bombing 1 1/2 miles away."

My Grandpa was on the LST572 which was an amphibious landing craft. I will never forget this interview. I thank my grandpa for letting me interview him and I learned a lot from this interview.
