One scorching Sunday afternoon Ben was watching television when a commercial popped on about Adventureland. On the commercial was a picture of a colossal ride they called the Side Winder A brand new ride that was opening today!
Once the commercial was over I ran downstairs to find my mom. Once I found her I asked anxiously, "Can we go to Adventureland today?""Nope not today but why the sudden interest?" she asked.
Then I told her about the commercial and the new ride on the commercial opening today.
"OK I understand but still no," she said.
"Why not?"
"Well your summer camp is going tomorrow."
"Boo! Ya!"
For the rest of the afternoon I couldn't stop talking or thinking about the Side Winder. By the time I went to bed my family was so annoyed and now they were talking about the Side Winder.
When I was asleep I started to dream about the Side Winder. In the dream I was on the Side Winder sweeping from side-to-side going higher and higher. The whole dream I couldn't stop smiling and laughing with my hands always in the air.
After my dream ride was over I woke up. My alarm clock said it was 6:00 a.m. I was so excited I woke up my whole family. At 7:00 a.m. my family and I got in our van and left to go to my summer camp. When we got to the site we got out and went inside. As we got inside everyone was excited. Usually my parents would sign us in and then leave. Today they stayed because they were to going with us on the camp's field trip.
At 7:30 a.m. the camp director Amanda separated all the campers into groups with 1-2 volunteers or counselors. After we were in groups all the campers piled on to 2 buses. My family went in our van because the buses were full.
The car/bus ride was 45 minutes long. All the way there my sister and I talked about what to do and about the Side Winder. Half way there, storm clouds started to gather above us. By the time we arrived at Adventureland it was a full blown booming thunder storm. By that time the amusement park had postponed its opening.
For the next 4 hours the thunder boomed and lightning flashed. After of 4 hours of sitting in the van hoping and praying for it to clear up, finally the amusement park opened and all the campers began to cheer,"Hurray."
By 12:18 p.m. all the campers where separated into groups and ran through the gates. But then we had to stop so the volunteers and counselors could catch up. After my group calmed down we decided to go on the Outlaw. As our group ran we passed the Side Winder. Everyone stopped dead in their tracks. They all gaped at the extraordinary ride.
As we stood in awe of the ride we noticed a sign. The sign said that you must be 54 inches tall to ride. Only my dad and I were tall enough from my group. I was six and I was tall enough but also afraid. On the commercial it looked awesome and didn't look scary. Up close though it was horrifying in an awesome way. So to show me it wasn't scary my dad went on it alone. As I watched this I got jealous and overcame my fear and decided to get into the line.
As I ran through the entrance of the ride my dad caught up with me and went too. As I got strapped in I was so anxious I couldn't wait. When it started it was so slow. But in a few more seconds I was screaming with joy. As it slowed down to come to a stop I calmed down a little. When it stopped I asked my dad," Can we go on again please?"
"No," he said.
"When then."
"After the rest of the group goes home."
"OK," I said glumly.
Finally they left the park at 4:00 pm. Finally I thought. As we walked back to the Side Winder we found out there was no waiting, so my dad and I went on it 10 times in a row. After that my mom called and she said,"It was time to go."
"OK," my dad said as we walked glumly back to the van. As I got in the van I thought ,"What will they have next year?"
