Alaska The Wild

During the summer I went to Minnesota to go all the way to Alaska. I went to an amusement park while I was in Minnesota and I was excited. Then I went on a plane for the first time in a few years. It was a very long and boring flight. My sister and I entertained ourselves on the plane by talking about the wild life we would see in Alaska. We read about the “big five” animals in Alaska, caribou, grizzly bears, wolves, moose, and Dall sheep. We argued about which one we wanted to see first. I wanted to see the grizzly bears and my sister wanted to see wolves. We argued even after we were in Alaska until my parents made us stop.

The beginning of my trip was extremely dull. After a few days it was enjoyable and exciting.
We went to this diner. They had burgers, sea food, pancakes, Pepsi and Coca Cola products. I really enjoyed the delectable food.

I said, "This food is so great!"
My Mom said, "It was only OK."
My Dad said, "We should go to Denali National Park."

We all agreed to that. So we got done with breakfast, paid, and got in the car.

The second we got into the car my sister and I began to argue again.

She said “Wolfs are the best and we will see them first.”

I responded by saying “Grizzly Bears are really cool, powerful, and easier to spot, we will see them first.”

We went back and forth almost the entire time. We were looking out the window with our binoculars trying to see wildlife. We kept building up the anticipation and hoping to find an animal. Personally, I just wanted to see my animal first.

You can only drive 14 miles into the park. We drove the entire 14 miles and still did not see anything. We were still arguing and hoping to see our animal. We turned around and drove for what seemed like a long time. My sister and I felt very dejected.

Then my sister said, "I needed to stretch my legs."

So we stopped at a look out area near a field. There were other people there. The field was huge and beautiful. There were different color greens in the grass and trees. It sloped downward toward a glistening stream. My sister was still using her binoculars trying to see wildlife. She kept teasing me that we would see her wolf first. I was running around having fun when it happened.

All of a sudden my sister said, "I saw something move out in the field."
I then saw what it was. It was a big grizzly bear! I had won! The bear was Huge and muscular. It looked like it was walking slowly but it covered a lot of ground as it walked. A cub was walking with it and looked little next to its mother. There brown coat looked very thick and I could see why they could live somewhere cold like Alaska.

My Dad said, “Get the camera.”

My sister took pictures while my Dad camcorder. Then, all of a sudden, we realized how close the bears were getting to us. I was very scared at that point.

My Dad said, "Quickly get in the car."
We did as he said. We then quickly drove away.
I said "That was scary."

Then I remembered to let my sister know I had won.

We did get some great pictures of the bears. Then we went back to our cabin and watched T.V. for a very short time. There were only two channels so we decided to go out and build a fire to roast marshmallows. That was a lot of fun and scary! We even had fun pouring water on it and watching the steam when we were done.

It was funny the next day when it began to rain and the fire warning sign still showed Very High. We were on a way to a tour of Denali where you can go farther into the park. On the tour my sister was still mad at me because I had won. This did not stop her from continuing to use her binoculars constantly looking for animals. About half way through the tour we were stopped at a lookout area. My sister would not even get off the bus she was so mad. I was outside with my Mom and Dad and a person on the tour seen it. It was a Wolf!!!! I ran back onto the bus and yelled for my sister. She thought I was kidding but she didn’t want to take any chances and ran off the bus.

There was a shady forest area on the other side of a river. The river was so clear you could see the rocks on the rivers bottom. Right on the edge between sunshine and shade the wolf was lying down and trying to sleep. My sister stood on the edge of a bench and cam corded the wolf.

When we got back on the bus my sister and I were all smiles! We didn’t fight the entire rest of the trip. I may have won, and was glad I did, but we both got to see our animals! It was a GREAT trip!
